The Weimaraner
Is the Weimaraner For You?

Think very carefully!! This is the athlete of the gundog world, but the academic too. Endless free running will not satisfy this intelligent, demanding animal! You will need time, energy and an understanding of behaviourism. Just look at Weimaraner Rescue or The Independent Weimaraner Rescue for proof.

However if you have researched by talking, meeting and reading, and no other breed comes close to your needs then no other breed will do! A Weimaraner will run at your side all day or lie at your feet all day. If you have a busy household a Weimaraner will be a sociable animal, if you live in a remote area the Weimaraner will be anti social and extremely protective - of everything! Including your dustbins!!

The more you can expose the young Weimaraner too the better, training classes are essential as is the need to continue to train and stimulate their mental needs. In 3-4 years you will be rewarded by a pleasant, well mannered, sociable animal (most of the time!!) I have never met any other breed which displays as many human traits!

Dog or Bitch?

Now there is a question! Everyone you speak to will probably say the opposite to each other! It really depends on their experiences, therefore these comments are based on my own experiences. I have owned litter brothers and various combinations of dogs and bitches over the last 20+ years.

I find dogs although physically larger, more affectionate and childish in their ways. They can have a tendency to become anti-social if you are not careful or indeed if they have a bad experience as a youngster. Trying to avoid too much affection towards them helps! - this is difficult though.

Bitches are smaller, usually! But also more independent. They can suffer from PMT don't tolerate others well around the time of coming into season.

Having said that, I have owned exceptions to both of these!! These are generalisations.

I recommend you talk to as many Weimaraner owners and breeders as you can. Visit the breed, particularly people who own several so you can experience and see the differences between ages and sex.
